Jianshui Zitao comes from Jianshui, located in the southwest province of Yunnan. Zitao is made from clay of five different colors. The final color of a teapot made from red clay can vary depending on the oxidation level, ranging from red to black. Jianshui Zitao is an art form that combines carving, painting, and calligraphy. The patterns and calligraphy on Jianshui Zitao are created step by step using a technique called “painting, carving, and filling.” After firing at 1120ºC-1180ºC, Jianshui Zitao teapots achieve a smooth and silky surface texture without using any glaze, achieved through a sanding and polishing process.
